For "home play" this evening, please type a 2-3 paragraph response to the following prompt:
Cherry tells Ponyboy that she doesn't want to see Dallas again becuase she is afraid she will fall in love with him. Have YOU ever kept your distance for a boy or girl whom you like? What qualities in the person appealed to you? What made you fell the need to stay away from that person?
Also, the Yankee BOOK swap is this Friday Dec 17th. Please remember to find a book, (Do not purchase a new book at a large chain store) wrap it and bring it to class on Friday. The book should be at or above our reading level; it should be something you think others would enjoy reading.

Due Weds & Fri...
Due Weds Dec 8th - Find an article from the Boston Globe or New York Times. Cut it out. Read it. Margin Note the article. Type a summary of the article. The article you choose should be at least the same length as "Ear Relief" or longer. The typed summary will be submitted in class on Weds. Remember to include the who, what, where, when and why in your summary. Minimize your details and provide all the key ideas. Refer to the class handout on how to write a summary.

CH 4 Type a 2-3 paragraph response to the following prompt - Referring to Dallas, Ponyboy states, "It would be a miracle if Dallas could love anything. The fight for self-preservation had hardened him beyond caring." How would YOU explain Dallas' seeming inability to love or care for anything beyond himself? Do you think a person could really be too hardened to love? Give examples from history or your own world.

Think about the roles - brother, mentor, friend - that Soda plays in his younger brother's life. Do YOU have a similar relationship with an older sibling, relative or friend? Adjectives that are not esssential can be omitted. Finally, each summary should try to address the 5 W's (Who, What, When, Where, Why and sometimes How).
B. Read & margin note Recycling With Nature. Next type a summary of this article.
Make two entries/responses in your Reflection Journal. You should respond to the following:

There will be NO essay due this week. Students will take a brief hiatus from writing the expository or persuasive piece. However, this week we will introduce summaries. Students will be taught how to remove details and answer the five W's. This will contradict the original instruction: details, examples, details and more examples...

Weds - Writing Development Test. Students will be provided an essay. They will be asked to identfy "the parts of the house." The test will be 10 - 12 questions. Students will be asked to write a response to each question.
Monday, Nov 8th - Essay due (remember to create vomit and develop a topic or sentence outline).

From kitchen appliances, to computers, to entertainment, to communication -technological innovations have ffected everyone. In a well-developed composition, identify one advancement in technology that you could not do without and explain why. OR
You just won a contest in which you get to spend a day with a famous person. In a well-developed composition, write about what you did and what you learned through the day.
Reading for meaning - margin note the article and write 5 questions about the article. Submit Thurs, Nov 4.

Homework Due 13th
Students were provided instruction: 3 conclusion techniques. They should apply one of these techniques in their next essay, "School Uniforms." This will be due October 18th. Students are required to write five introduction paragraphs for the topic, "School Uniforms." Each paragraph should demonstrate the use of each technique. One pargraph will demonstrate the use of a quote. One paragraph will demonstrate the use of an analogy. One paragraph will demonstate the use an anecdote, a startling or interesing fact and pose a question to the reader. This is due Thursday, October 14th. Students should continue to read independently and record their minutes.

Students should bring their independent reading book to class. They should also bring their binders and their reading logs. As always, students should have a pen, pencil and two different colored highlighters.
